“Gridiron Heroes” Singer Becomes a Real Life Hero to a Detroit Shelter Dog

It’s not every day that a local celebrity walks into DACC looking to adopt a dog. But that’s just what happened recently when Theo “Gridiron” Spight and his family visited the shelter.  It wasn’t until their adoption photo was posted to social media that an eagle-eyed fan recognized Theo as the man who sings the Detroit Lions fight song at Ford Field.

Theo and his family knew they were interested in adopting a shelter dog, they just weren’t sure which one.  After talking with staff and volunteers, the family decided to meet Scrod, who at the time was one of the shelter’s longest residents and was a major favorite with volunteers and shelter staff.

“All the volunteers told us that they loved him and now we know why,” said Theo a few days after adopting Scrod. “He’s already the big baby of the house. Jumped right in bed with my wife and I only hours after being here. Slept there the whole night! We named him Ghost.”

We’re thrilled that the man who sings Gridiron Heroes has become a real-life hero to Scrod, now Ghost.  We’ll be joining in the chorus every time the Lions score this fall!

Sing it with us:

Forward down the field,
A charging team that will not yield.
And when the Blue and Silver wave,
Stand and cheer the brave.
Rah, Rah, Rah.
Go hard, win the game.
With honor you will keep your fame.
Down the field and gain,
A Lion victory!
GO LIONS!

If you are interested in adopting or fostering a dog, head to the NEW DACC, located at 1431 E. Ferry Street in Detroit. It’s open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to meet adoptable dogs.  Learn more at www.friendsofdacc.org about adopting, fostering, shelter breaks, and how to donate.
